LESSON -CVIT #3
1. SUBJECT: Overcoming challenges with CVIT technology
2. OBJECTIVES: Learner will be able to identify unique challenges using CVIT technology for content delivery.
A. Identify best method of communicating with site coordinator/technician.
- Review lesson plan and determine proper timing for including additional material feed.
- Determine method of communicating when technician needs to manually switch sites if voice activation does not work or checking in on other sites.
- Communicate audio/visual problems including hissing, popping and down sites.
B . Identify methods to communicate with other sites allowing for time delays and speaking clearly.
C. Identify and demonstrate ability to include additional CVIT technologies during class presentation.
D. Identify and demonstrate ability to limit instructors and students movement during class presentation.
E. Identify and demonstrate effective classroom management skills and classroom behaviors.
F. Identify technology difficulties and best procedures to adapt to difficulties.
G. Identify student’s accessibility to alternative technology and determine best method of assessment and method of submitting (assignments and test).3. RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
- WebCT - a course management system to web enhance CVIT courses. Contact Julie Cottin 269-387-4216 or julie.cottin@wmich.edu for setting up WebCT access for DDE course.
- Videoconferecing for learning: http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/vidconf/
- Interactive Videoconferencing in Distance Education http://www.uidaho.edu/eo/dist10.html
4. ACTIVITIES:
A. Identify best method of communicating with site coordinator/technician.
- Review lesson plan and determine proper timing for including additional material feed (equipment cues). Documenting lesson plan and providing copies to site coordinators lets site coordinators know what is planned during the lesson plus give them a guideline to follow for switching technologies.
- Sample Lesson Plan provides timeline to site coordinator.
- Sample Lesson Plan template- (Word Document)
- Determine method of communicating when technician needs to manually switch sites if voice activation does not work or checking in on other sites.
- Keywords that will be used to alert site coordinators of needs
- Keywords site coordinator will alert instructor of needs
- Phone number
- Fax number
- Communicate audio/visual problems including hissing, popping and down sites.
- Keywords that will be used to alert site coordinators of problems
- Keywords site coordinator will alert instructor of difficulties
- Phone number
- Fax number
B . Identify methods to communicate with other sites allowing for time delays and speaking clearly. Best accomplished when another site can participate.
- Time delay- there is a short time delay between sites
- Speak clearly into microphone
- Use eye contact with camera- students will at sites will view as you looking at them.
- Two-way television with audio and video, not one way television. Participation and proper etiquette is essential for a successful class.
C. Identify and demonstrate ability to include additional CVIT technologies during class presentation.
WMU CVIT Rooms are equipped with presentation technologies that the originating site can feed directly into the video screen in order for all sites to veiw. Note any room has the ability for an instructor to bring in their own laptop for presenting material.

D. Identify and demonstrate ability to limit instructors and students movement during class presentation.
- Avoid rapid movements, appear jerky at other sites.
- Cameras are voice activated regarding switching to the site that is speaking (or making noise) but the site coordinator needs to be manually track movement. Slower movement or limited movement is better.
E. Demonstrate effective classroom management skills and classroom behaviors.
- Set the "rules" provide students with guidelines and policies that work with your own teaching strategies (covered in lesson CVIT-2).
- Review with students verbally and with a written document of the guidelines, policies and expectations to eliminate confusion.
F. Identify technology difficulties and best procedures to adapt to difficulties.
- A Teacher's Guide to Videoconferencing: http://www.netc.org/digitalbridges/teachersguide/introduction.html
- Noise- Extra noise can be distracting, eliminate side conversations, rustling papers, eating and any unnecessary noise both from the student and instructor. Be considerate of others, if you have an uncontrollable cough do not attend class, contact instructor for alternative instruction.
- Technical difficulties- once site coordinator is alerted of technical difficulties adjustments will be made. If technical difficulties can not be resolved students will be provided with a copy of the video for that class.
G. Identify student’s accessibility to alternative technology and determine best method of assessment and method of submitting (assignments and test).
- Having assignments submitted and taking test in class requires that requires that a hardcopy be sent to instructor via postal mail, which creates time delays and potential of lost mail.
- Electronic submittal of assignments via email reduces time delays and provides the instructor with an electronic copy to make comments on and send back to the student.
- Using WebCT - WMU course management system for web enhancing a CVIT provides
- additional communication tools
- online testing options
- electronic submittal for assignments
- electronic gradebook
Record Session: Practice lecturing using CVIT technologies and include the above information. Site coordinator and/or other participants will try to replicate common challenges presented using the CVIT technology. Have site coordinator /DDE representative record the practice session.
5. ASSIGNMENT #CVIT-3:
A. Site coordinator/DDE rep will record practice sessioin onto VHS tape of the learner presenting a short lecture including challenges learners will face using CVIT technologies and equipment.
B. Self evaluate recording to determine areas for improvement.
C. Complete CVIT Post-Assessment located under WebCT Quizzes (Note: For evaluation click here.)
