Distance Education |
There are different models of distance learning using different technologies and modes of delivery. Distance education can be completely at a distance or a hybrid model which has some travel/ face to face meetings. Distance Education online courses have been expanding rapidly.
From a personal experience I feel the following distance learning technologies were the most beneficial during my teacing and learning experiences.
- communication through a threaded discussion board when instructors required effective participation and students
organized thier posting by saying as much as they could in the fewest number of words. Threaded discussion boards also provided a means of expanding the topic beyond the initial statement
- asynchronous delivery allowed participants to focus on the content when it was convienent for their schedule and not have other obligations pressing
- introductions telling alittle about each participant and their background encouraged a learning community
- online testing that provides immediate results and the ability to retake the test when if permitted by the instructor. (using a large database of questions test the content and eliminates memorizing the answers)
- frequently asked questions and/or concise syllabus provides the participants with necessary information and decreases repetition of information by the facilitator
- ability to review content until participant understands, example: movie clip explaining lift and drag of areodynamics.
- accessing content outside of the classroom, virtual field trips and other online resources provide information that may not be available in a traditional classroom especially with budget considerations
- virtual conferences (although they need to be at a scheduled time) allow participants to communicate with experts anywhere in the world.
Educators in a traditional delivery of content (face to face) can benefit by using technology to deliver additional content outside the classroom. Providing students with resources outside of the classroom can help prepare for an assignment and review content. I encourage all educators to consider the information provided in the following links to enhance their teaching and learning environment.
